Informational writing is intended to explain, give information, or inform. The author of an informational text should not assume the reader has prior knowledge of the topic or a prior understanding of a particular process.

Informational writing can be seen in non-fiction texts, magazine or newspaper articles, recipes, or instructional manuals. Informational writing should be based on research or reliable evidence. Sources could include personal observation (scientific experiments), textbooks, charts, articles and maps. There are, of course, many more, but you get the idea.
